Hi
Folks,
Thanks to all who helped with
last night's meeting.
Here's the critical stuff going
on:
First, our next camp-out will be
February 10-12 at LOST PINES.
The main event will be the
climbing tower. In order to use
the climbing tower we have to
hire instructors. To do this we
MUST know who is coming on the
trip by next week's meeting.
So, please come next week with
hard knowledge about whether you
will or will not come.
Crew 1954 is invited to join the
Troop for this camp-out.
Climbing towers are definitely
high adventure.
Second, Congrats to our O Meet
team who finished in fourth
place in their division. This
was out of a field of 11. Great
work folks. We'll get into the
top three next year for sure.
Third, I've gotten some feedback
on the possibility of moving the
meeting night from Tuesday to
Thursday and I'd like some
more. Please let me know if you
have any strong feelings.
Lastly, we have a variety of
events coming up that, while we
are not participating as a
group, you're welcome to
attend. Some of the younger
scouts need additional
activities to qualify them for
First Class. They can get
activity credit by participating
in any of these events. Here
they are: This Saturday at 8:30,
Cub Scout Pinewood Derby.
Saturday February 5, Report To
State. Sunday February 6, Scout
Sunday. Saturday February 18
Merit Badge University
(you must already be
registered). We'll have
additional activities in March.
Next week we'll continue to work
on a variety of scout skills and
we'll have a demonstration by
anyone who brings a skateboard,
with some prizes for the best
stuph.
Patrol Award: All units were
judged to be of equivalent on
all measures. Awards to all.
As
always, the Troop 1954 events
calendar, this and all back
newsletters, and all sorts of
other useful information is
available on our website at
www.sanmarcos1954.org The
Wednesday Newsletter is the
official record of Troop 1954
and serves as minutes for all
troop and committee meetings.

notes: 1)
you get half
a point for
wearing a
"class B" on
a "class A"
night
2) We're
adding a
category for
the
evening's
contest
(whatever it
may be).
We'll see
how it
works.
3) We'll try
another new
rule...especially
because we
have reduced
summer
attendance.
In case of
tie, the
patrol with
the largest
number of
people
attending
gets the
award.
Note: Scouts
with more
than three
consecutive
misses will
not be
counted
against
patrol
attendance
scores.
Such scouts
are not
removed from
their
patrols.
They are
simply not
counted for
attendance
points until
they
return.
Also note
that when
all patrols
score the
same on a
category, it
doesn't
matter what
they score. |
|

A scouting tradition
By BOB BURCHETTE,
Greensboro North
Carolina News
and Record
HIGH POINT - James
Montgomery shared a
multitude of stories
around campfires and
hiked many miles
after joining Boy
Scout Troop 4 at
Wesley Memorial
United Methodist
Church in 1925, only
five years after the
troop was organized.
His days in scouting
were some of his
most exciting during
his 92 years,
Montgomery
said.
Troop 4, organized
by the High Point
Chamber of Commerce
and sponsored by the
church, is the
oldest continuous
troop in the city.
The troop was
founded Dec. 4,
1920, and will
observe its 85th
anniversary at 6
p.m. Feb. 15.
Montgomery, the
oldest member among
Troop 4 alumni,
plans on being at an
anniversary
celebration at
Wesley Memorial Church. He's hoping brother Frank, 82, also a member
of the troop, will
be on hand for the
celebration, too.
James Montgomery
joined this fairly
new thing called
"scouting'' that had
started in England
in 1908 as soon as
he was old enough -
at the minimum age
of 12. He and his
buddies saw scouting
as a great
adventure, getting
to go camping,
hiking through the
woods, playing in
lakes, ponds and
rivers, and working
on a variety of
projects to earn
merit badges, he
said.
By age 17,
Montgomery had
earned his Eagle
badge, the Boy
Scouts of America
program's highest
award. That was in
1930 - the year five
troop members earned
Eagles - brought the
troop's total for
the elite award to
10. Montgomery
is the only
surviving Eagle
recipient among the
first 10 who
received the award.
Peyton Moffitt
earned the first
Eagle rank in the
troop in 1927,
followed by Craig
McCanless and Howard
Kelly in 1928 and
Sherrod Salisbury
and Frank Sizemore
Jr. in 1929.
At the upcoming
anniversary event,
Troop 4 will award
six Eagle badges,
bringing the total
to 159 during the
troop's history,
according to
scoutmaster Steve
Bouldin.
O. Delk Smith, who
became scoutmaster
in 1924, was the
leader when both of
the Montgomery
boys - and many more
- joined the troop.
Smith remained
scoutmaster until
1942 and is credited
with "holding it
together'' during
the tough, formative
years - the
depression and the
first part of World
War II, said former
Troop 4 scoutmaster
Lawson Ingram.
Delk never had more
than 25 boys in the
troop at any one
period, but he was
faithful to the task
of keeping the troop
going.
Ingram also spent 22
years as
scoutmaster,
retiring in 1985,
and the troop
averaged about 40
members per year
during his tenure,
he said. The troop
now has 59 members.
Over the years, at
least 600 boys were
members of the
troop, and many
became community
leaders in High
Point and
elsewhere. Some
served with
distinction in the
military and in
civic positions,
Bouldin said. Like
Montgomery,
many of the Troop 4
members were not
Wesley Memorial
Church
members. "We went
over there because
that was the only
troop around," he
said. "I was a
member of First
Methodist.''
Montgomery's
scouting experience
didn't end with
Troop 4. He spent 40
years in Scouting,
serving as
scoutmaster for
several years at
Troop 55, which
later was organized
at
First United Methodist Church. He also was scoutmaster at another
Troop 55 - in
Danville, where he worked for a few years before settling in with a
job at the U.S.
Postal Service in
Greensboro.
"I returned to
High Point in
1957 and the first
thing they did at
the church was ask
me to be scoutmaster
of Troop 55 again.
Of course, I said
'yes,' " he said.
Montgomery did
that until sometime
in the '70s.
Montgomery
said he made lasting
friendships in
scouting. More
important, as a
youngster in Troop
4, he and the other
boys "learned
values. You learned
so much about many
things in going
through the ranks;
and you learned how
to get along with
people.''
