The Troop 1954
Wednesday Newsletter

Wednesday, February 4, 2004

Thanks to everyone for their help at last night's meeting.

It's going to be a big weekend in Scouting.  Saturday is the Report to State Parade (as well as the actual report).  This Sunday is Scout Sunday, a day when scouts are encouraged to go as a unit to a place of worship.  Troop 1954 is proud to participate in both of these events.  You'll find details for each of them under Announcements below.

Also this weekend, Ms. Patty will receive the Silver Beaver award at a Capitol Area Council awards ceremony on Friday.  The event is at the Great Hills Baptist Church, 10500 Jollyville Road in North Austin.  Established in 1931, the Silver Beaver Award is presented for distinguished service to young people within a BSA local council. Ms. Patty is the first member of Troop 1954 to be honored in this manner.  What can I say except that I truly don't know where we'd be without her.

Of course, the big news of the week is that we will be going to Philmont in July 2005.  We have 12 spots on this trip for 2-4 adults and 8-10 kids.  Philmont requires that kids be 14 years old by January 1, 2005 OR have finished 8th grade by June of that year.  Of course, the space and age limits means not everyone will get to go this time, but we're hoping to have several exciting backpacking events leading up to Philmont and everyone will be able to participate in them.  Qualifying scouts will be offered places on the Philmont trip according to their level of activity in the troop and the troop committee's assessment of their level of maturity and responsibility.  The details of this have not yet been worked out, so stay tuned.

Announcements

1) Here's the information for the Report to State!

The short version: Leave from the Scout Hut Saturday Morning at 7:30 SHARP.  Bring money for lunch at Spaghetti Warehouse or make alternative plans to come back early or eat lunch elsewhere.  Get back to the Scout Hut by 2:30 or earlier.

The long version:   Texas Scouts will converge on Austin from all corners of the state February 7, 2004 to participate in the Annual Report to State Ceremony and celebrate the 94th anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America. Ceremonies will begin with a breakfast for the official delegates of the 23 councils in Texas and their advisors at 7:30 a.m. at the Hyatt Regency Hotel where they will hear an outstanding speaker. Past speakers include Dr. Red Duke, Drayton McClain, Coach Spike Dykes, and Olympian Josh Davis. After the breakfast the delegates will join thousands of other Scouts as they parade up Congress Avenue to the State Capitol Building where the delegates will give a report on the accomplishments of Scouting in their council in the House of Representatives Chambers.

Meet at the Scout Hut Sat 7 Feb at 7:15. We are leaving at 7:30 SHARP. Those that are late will just have to catch up to us on I-35 or in Austin, which will be a pain.

We will probably park in the old Palmer Auditorium parking lot (Riverside at 1st St), get the boys on the trailer and drive over to the gathering spot on Congress St Bridge. We will decorate the trailer while we are waiting for the parade to begin.

The parade will last until about 10:30, we will tour the capital building and then go to lunch at Spaghetti Warehouse. We plan on leaving Austin at 1:00. If you need to leave earlier, please feel free to skip lunch, however, I highly recommend you plan on touring the capital building with us.

Bring:
1) Camera
2) Wear Full Class A Scout uniform.
3) Watch the weather and dress appropriately.

2)  Here's the information for Scout Sunday.

The short version: Please meet in your Class A at the front of the First Presbyterian Church, 410 W. Hutchison at 10:30. (It's the small red brick church between Palmer's and the Big First Baptist Church.) The service ends at noon. Since you will be participating in the service, you will accrue service hours for this.

The long version: The first week of February is often referred to as Scouting Anniversary Week and the first Sunday in February is called Scout Sunday.  This commemorates the founding of the Boy Scouts of America via a National Charter from Congress on February 8, 1910.  Sunday is celebrated by thousands of scouts each year at Churches and Synagogues across the United States...  On February 8, 1910, William Dickson Boyce (a Chicago publisher) and a group of outstanding leaders filed incorporation papers for the Boy Scouts of America in the District of Columbia.  The purpose, he said, "Shall be to promote, through organization, and cooperation with other agencies, the ability of boys to do things for themselves and others, to train them in Scoutcraft, and to teach them patriotism, courage, self-reliance, and kindred virtues, using the methods which are in common use by Boy Scouts."

3) Congratulations to Zach Painton and Sean Fink.  Zach advanced to Star and Sean to Second and First Class this week.

4) Thanks to everyone who helped at the Scout Hut cleanup this weekend.  It you haven't seen it make sure to check it out.  It looks like a whole new place.  Particular thanks to Eric Meyers who not only came up with a power washer, but washed pretty much the whole place down.

5) Patrol Leaders Council Retreat will be on Sunday, February 8th from 4:00 - about 8:00 at the Painton's.  We'll start at about 4:00 and continue through early evening.  We will be setting the meeting schedule and activities for the next three months as well as discussing issues of organization and leadership.  SPL, ASPL, and the PL from each patrol (or other representative) as well as the patrol coaches should plan on attending.  Other scouts and parents, please e-mail me or any youth or adult leader with your ideas and suggestions.

6) Merit Badge University will be on Saturday Feb. 21.

Upcoming Events

Scout Essentials Training, Saturday February 14

We've got a great opportunity for parent training coming up on February 14th.  Garry White will be doing Scouting Essentials training starting at 9 at the Scout Hut.  Essentials gives adults the background they need to be knowledgeable about scouts and to help lead the troop.  This is a great idea for everyone...whether they want to lead or not.  Scout essentials goes from 9 to 10:30 and will be followed by a 30 minute roundtable discussion.  It should be over by 11.

Order of the Arrow Elections, Tuesday March 2

We now have a fairly large group of First Class.  All scouts of that rank and above are eligible for election to OA (Order of the Arrow).  The OA is a honor camping society founded in 1915.  It's purposes are: 1) to recognize those Scout campers who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives.  2) To develop and maintain camping traditions and spirit.  3) To promote Scout camping.  3) To crystallize the Scout habit of helpfulness into a life purpose of leadership in cheerful service to others.  You can find more information on their Website at: http://www.oa-bsa.org/    Scouts are elected to OA membership by their peers.  All scouts vote on OA membership.  We will be having OA elections at our meeting on Tuesday March 2.  The OA team from Lockhart has graciously agreed to come in and run the elections.

Several scouts are very close to completing their 1st Class requirements.  Now's the time to finish those up so that you will be eligible for election to OA by March.

Twin Valley Camporee, March 26-28

Friday, March 26 - Sunday March 28 is the Twin Valley Camporee.  This year
sounds like a really good one.  It will be held at the Ruby Ranch outside of Buda (very convenient).  It will have a medieval theme with competition in catapults and jousting as well as the usual first aid and fire building. Each scout has been assigned to be a specialist in one or two of the Camporee activities.  They should bone up on those activities over the next month and a half.

Saturday April 24th, Indoor Training for Scout Leaders and Parents

8:30 to 4:00 at the San Marcos Methodist Church.  This is the essential course for understanding how Scout Troops and meetings are supposed to work. The more parents who have this the better.  I really urge anyone who hasn't taken this course to do so.

Saturday and Sunday May 15 and 16, Outdoor Training

This is the second half of the complete scout leader training course.  It will be held at Kiwanis Camp outside San Marcos.
