The Troop 1954
Wednesday Newsletter

Wednesday, May 12, 2004

Hi Folks,

Well, we had a good, productive and even reasonably orderly meeting on Tuesday night, but our attendance was low since most of the Biohazards and Crimson Fromage were connected to the band concert that happened the same night.  We missed you all, but glad to have kids participating in many different activities.

This week we'd also like to welcome new member (we hope) Rene Bourgeois.  Rene's known many of the members of the troop for years.  We look forward to his (and his family's) enthusiastic participation in our troop.  Rene will be joining the Biohazards.  Please, let's go out of our way to make him welcome and get him involved.

We planned for the Wolf Mountain/Enchanted Rock campout but given the number of scouts absent, we're not really sure who is and who is not going.  We'll have to spend a few minutes firming up planning (and payment) next Tuesday.

Our new meeting order (work first, game last) seemed to work out well, so we'll be sticking with that for a while.  We were about 5 minutes late on opening and closing both.  That's OK but we'll really try to keep it on time.

This weekend is Adult and Youth training.  Please come if you possibly can.  The more adults and kids we have trained, the better organized we're likely to be.  I've emailed Molly Alexander for schedule information but haven't heard from her (in fairness, I only emailed yesterday).  As soon as I get more information, I'll send it along to you.

Our winning patrol this week was once again the Vicious Badgers.  But, because of the very low attendance of the Biohazards and Crimson Fromage, I've decided that it would be unfair to award any points for the meeting.  We'll probably have treats for everyone next Tuesday.

We also had an extremely successful PLC retreat last Saturday.  We've set the calendar through the summer to the start of school.  Please check it out on our website.

As always, the Troop 1954 events calendar, this and all back newsletters,  and all sorts of other useful information is available on our website at www.sanmarcos1954.org

Announcements

1) Money for Summer Camp is now due.  Please be sure to make arrangements with Susie Lewis or Cece Fink if you haven't already.

2) Adult and youth outdoor training is this weekend. Adults who plan on attending need to go to Scout Roundtable tonight, May 13. Youth training would be a really good idea for anyone who hasn’t had it. It’s most of the day on Saturday. More details as we get them.

3) As announced earlier, we've changed the order of the meetings.  Opening is now followed by patrol activities and games come at the end.  We'll also try using a whistle to get people who stray from the group to come back to the center at critical times.

4) We'll be going to Wolf Mountain/Enchanted Rock May 21-23. If you plan to go on that camp out please bring $10 to the meeting next week to cover expenses (if you haven't paid already)

5) Boy do we still need the front and back of the Scout Shack mowed.  If anyone can do this, please let me know (or just do it).  In another week or two we're going to have to rent a bush hog (or perhaps a mixture of sheep and goats).

Essay

This week, I've got nothing.  I'm still working on the alumni list.

Upcoming Events

Twin Valley District Roundtable, May 13

Roundtable is at 7:00 the second Thursday of each month.  This one is particularly important since you must attend if your are planning on going to the Adult Outdoor Training on April 15-16.

May Scout Hut Work Day, Date TBA

We're hoping to paint the main meeting room of the Scout Hut.

Saturday and Sunday May 15 and 16, Outdoor Training

This is the second half of the complete scout leader training course.  It will be held at Kiwanis Camp outside San Marcos.

Camping at Wolf Mountain/Enchanted Rock May 21-23

Silver Pines Junior Leadership Training Program, May 30 - June 5.

Camping at Guadalupe River State Park, June 11-13.

Troop 1954 Summer Camp, July 3 - July 11

We will be doing summer camp at Camp Dale Resler in the mountains of New Mexico.  This trip will also include visits to White Sands National Monument and Carlsbad Caverns National Park.  It should be a great chance to get away from the summer heat of San Marcos and into the cool mountains of New Mexico.  It is also a fantastic chance for the scouts to make progress on advancement, have a great time, and bond more tightly as a group.  If you can possibly send your scout to summer camp, please do so.  The estimated cost for this program (including travel, all visits, and spending money), about $330 for youth and $220 for adults.

Back to School Water Event, Friday August 13th

We're headed to Schlitterbahn for one last day of summer fun before the school year begins (kids boo parents cheer!).  We'd really like to encourage the kids to bring friends along on this one.  As always, we can use new members, especially among the older kids.
