The Troop 1954
Wednesday Newsletter

Wednesday, May 26, 2004

Hi Folks,

Good job again last night folks.  Here's the news from the meeting:

The patrols voted overwhelmingly to go to the beach at Galveston for the June campout, so that's what we'll do.  In previous years the troop has been able to stay at churches (thus avoiding the sandy sleeping bag problem) and we'll hope for that again this time.  We'll try to get work done on the oceanography merit badge on this trip.

The Vicious Badgers beat the Biohazards 3-1 in a knot tying relay.  The Biohazards cried foul claiming that they misinterpreted the rules, and demanded a re-match.  So, we'll be having a "grudge match" between the two patrols at the next meeting.  I'll provide a tray of HEB brownies or other suitable comestible as reward for the winner.

Scout Shack Work: I've almost finished painting the walls in the "game room."  That's been fine but I'll need lots of help if the rest of the place is going to get painted and other work is going to get done.  So, next week we've got Scout Shack Work Days.  We plan on spending Monday, more or less all day, working at the place.  We'll also probably work Tuesday and Wednesday mornings.  More details further down in this newsletter.

Schedule Change: We'll be having a "swimming meeting" next week.  Location TBA.  We'll be doing the yearly BSA swim test as well as just recreation.

As always, the Troop 1954 events calendar, this and all back newsletters,  and all sorts of other useful information is available on our website at www.sanmarcos1954.org

Announcements

1) We will be working on the Scout Hut next week.  Adults who are able to help, please get in touch with Rich Warms r.warms@txstate.edu and let him know what days you are available to help.  Youth are welcome and encouraged to come and help as long as there is adequate adult supervision.

2) Gore-Tex raingear is currently available at London Fog in the Outlet Mall at unusually discounted prices (about $140.00 for parka and pants).  If you plan on doing any serious backpacking (especially if you plan on Philmont next year) this is a great opportunity to buy this gear at a sharply discounted price (normal price is about $280.00).

3) AFS is looking for a family to host a foreign exchange student from Thailand next fall.  The boy is an A student and a Scout.  It would be fantastic if one of our families was able to host this kid and he was able to participate in our troop.  If you are interested, contact Tom Heathman goldtom@riverrats.net for more details.

Scout Hut Work Days

Here's a list of what I think needs to be done at the Scout Hut.  Our ability to do it depends on how many people we get to come and work and the particular skills they have.

1) Flagpole.  We have a flagpole but it needs to be set in concrete.  We need someone who knows how to do this as well as a post hole digger and other appropriate equipment.

2) Electrical: make sure all electrical conduit, outlets, etc. are safe.  Replace burned out light bulbs.  Get all the lighting working.  Install smoke detectors.

3) Plumbing: Determine which of the two bathrooms is in better condition.  Close off the one in worst condition and focus efforts on the better one.  Make sure all fixtures and lighting operates properly.

4) Painting:  Clear and then paint main meeting room.  This is a large job and we need help from everyone who has equipment or can wield a roller.  Also, need suggestions on how to deal with cleaning up and or painting the drop ceiling.

5) General clean-up and cobweb abatement program:  We need people to clean up entrance hallway: put funnel cake machinery back in trailer (or otherwise store), clean the cobwebs and other filth off of the ceiling.

Upcoming Events

Camping at Wolf Mountain/Enchanted Rock May 21-23

Silver Pines Junior Leadership Training Program, May 30 - June 5.

Scout Hut Work Camp

We'll be there daily from May 31 to June 4 (I think...more about this as we get closer to the dates...I know, we're pretty close already.

Camping at Guadalupe River State Park, June 11-13.

Troop 1954 Summer Camp, July 3 - July 11

We will be doing summer camp at Camp Dale Resler in the mountains of New Mexico.  This trip will also include visits to White Sands National Monument and Carlsbad Caverns National Park.  It should be a great chance to get away from the summer heat of San Marcos and into the cool mountains of New Mexico.  It is also a fantastic chance for the scouts to make progress on advancement, have a great time, and bond more tightly as a group.  If you can possibly send your scout to summer camp, please do so.  The estimated cost for this program (including travel, all visits, and spending money), about $330 for youth and $220 for adults.

Back to School Water Event, Friday August 13th

We're headed to Schlitterbahn for one last day of summer fun before the school year begins (kids boo parents cheer!).  We'd really like to encourage the kids to bring friends along on this one.  As always, we can use new members, especially among the older kids.
