The Troop 1954
Wednesday Newsletter

Wednesday, September 8, 2004

Hi Folks,

Thanks much to everyone who helped at last night's meeting.  We had a great turn out, a really nice slide presentation from Dr. J. and a cool game.  We also inaugurated a new feature for our meetings.  Starting with last night, each meeting now has a very brief presentation by the Troop Scribe who will announce the attendance figures for the previous week, the contest winner for the previous week, and the current patrol contest point standings.  This will accomplish two functions: it will keep the patrols informed about their standings in the point contest and it will create another position carrying weekly responsibility.

We've got a really exciting trip to Galveston and Houston coming up this weekend.  Please keep in mind that Dr. J. needs to know who is going today because he will buy advance tickets for some attractions tomorrow morning.  Please, if you did not sign up for the trip last night, let me know by 4:00 today if you plan on going.  So far, the following people have signed up:

John and Eric Myers
Alexey and Mike Dillon
Philip Lewis (X2)
Justin and Nicole Williams
Lee Clendennen
Mason Bandy
Ben, Rich, and Nathan Warms
Dr. J
Mz. Patty

If your name is not on this list and you plan on going (or if your name is on it and you don't) please email me as soon as possible.

This week's patrol contest winners: The Vicious Badgers, who seem to be pulling to a substantial lead.

As always, the Troop 1954 events calendar, this and all back newsletters,  and all sorts of other useful information is available on our website at www.sanmarcos1954.org

Announcements

1) We now have all the stuff for popcorn sales.  It will be available at the Scout Hut during meetings.  Please keep in mind that selling popcorn is a really good way to put money in your scout account.  The troop receives something like 1/3 of the selling price back.  All of that money is put directly into the scouting account of the person who has made the sale.

2) Roundtable and OA are Thursday night at 7.  OA members will be working on bonework (chockers, etc.).

3) Troop elections are coming up in about a month.  Please review the requirements for leadership positions on our website.  Please note that there are specific leadership training, and attendance requirements for both meetings and events.  Please also note that you may not receive credit for holding a leadership position unless you have actually demonstrated some leadership (for example, just to pick some randomly, the Troop Historian can not get any credit for holding a leadership position unless he actually submits a troop history for the past six months. Or, the Troop Guide can not receive any credit for holding a leadership position unless he has worked with the new patrol over the past six months...)

More Scouts In The News: Some Eagle Scout Stuff

These young men from the Austin area recently earned the Eagle Scout award:

Nathan Donnellan, son of Tom and Berniece Donnellan of Lago Vista, constructed a new sidewalk from the band hall to the gymnasium at Lago Vista Middle School. He graduated from Lago Vista High School and will attend the California Institute of Technology.

Graham Monahan, son of Joe and Mary Kay Monahan of Lago Vista, completed a digital and written archive of the Lago Vista Air Power Museum. He graduated from Lago Vista High School and is attending Texas A&M University at Galveston.

Thomas Shallue, son of Tom and Barbara Shallue of Lago Vista, built eight bat houses and installed them in area parks. He is a graduate of Lago Vista High School and is attending the University of North Texas.

Peoria-area Boy Scout builds veterans' memorial

JoAnn Brunk said her grandson wanted a challenge when he decided more than two years ago to build a veterans' memorial as his Eagle Scout project.

Now, Eric Ingram, 16, is two months away from completing the memorial in this small community's town square after securing thousands of dollars in money, labor and material donations.

For the memorial's centerpiece, Ingram was able to convince the military to loan him a 6,500-pound helicopter that was used by the U.S. Army in Korea. The 43-foot-long helicopter arrived at the memorial Saturday morning from New York.

Ingram said the helicopter's arrival in the city 10 miles east of Peoria was "very emotional."

"I think just seeing the helicopter is here is greater than the finished product," Ingram said.

The helicopter was placed in front of the memorial Saturday. Before it can be hoisted to its final spot, welders will reattach its wings and blades.

Washington area residents donated a truck, trailer and time to drive out to New York Friday to retrieve the helicopter from the military. Ingram could not travel with them because he had school.

But he did get to sit in the helicopter's cockpit to inspect it. Ingram said the military removed its gauges and welded its guns shut.

Contractors will install two sidewalks near the new memorial, rocks will be laid underneath and military flags will be planted.

"(I) thought the veterans needed to be thanked with something more than a concrete wall," Ingram said.

Ingram said he hopes to have the memorial completed in two months.
