The Troop 1954
Wednesday Newsletter

Hi Folks,

Man, Dodgeball rocks.  What a kick.

Thanks to everyone who helped at last evening's meeting.  It was a good one.

We had a fantastic trip to Galveston over the weekend.  Many thanks to Dr. J. for organizing it.  We really crammed a lot of stuff in to a short bit of time.  I think this is one trip we're all going to remember for a long time.

Scouts should be working on finishing up their Oceanography merit badges.  They can complete them whether they went to Galveston or not.  We've decided that in lieu of requirement seven we will accept tracking and recording Hurricane Ivan.  It's a great opportunity to learn about hurricanes by watching one that's pretty sure to be big in the news in the next week.

We have a Court of Honor coming up on October 12 and would like to award lots of Oceanography merit badges, so please get those workbooks back to us fast.

By the way, this is our general policy on merit badges: We will, of course, be glad to award merit badges when the requirements are filled at camps or merit badge university, or other events organized at the district, council, or national level.  For all other merit badges, we will be glad to award them on receipt of the appropriate completed Merit Badge Workbook.  We will not accept blue cards signed by parents without the accompanying workbook.  Workbooks can be downloaded free of charge from www.meritbadge.com as well as several other sites.  I will also be pleased to provide them for you.  A more complete policy statement on merit badges will be available on the policies section of our website shortly.

There's lots of training and other good stuff coming up.  Look for more details under announcements.

Announcements

1) We now have all the stuff for popcorn sales.  It will be available at the Scout Hut during meetings.  Please keep in mind that selling popcorn is a really good way to put money in your scout account.  The troop receives something like 1/3 of the selling price back.  All of that money is put directly into the scouting account of the person who has made the sale.

2) Adult training is this Saturday, September 18 at First United Methodist from 8:00 to 3:30. Cost is $8 and includes lunch. A trained troop is a happy troop, so if you haven’t had this training, and you can make it, please do.

3) The Texas Wildlife Expo is coming up on the weekend of October 2 and 3. We will have to decide next week if we are going (and if we wish to camp).

4) Troop elections will be held on October 5. If you wish to run for SPL or PL please look at the website for the requirements for standing for election and the expectations for holding it.

5) Court of Honor will be held on October 12. If you’ve any requirements to finish up, now would be a good time.

6) Junior Leader Training will be held Saturday October 16 from 10-4 at Kiwanis Camp. Cost is $15 and includes lunch. Candidates for SPL and ASPL must have taken JLT, so if you want to be SPL or ASPL sometime and haven’t, you need to. All PLs must have JLT or take it when they become PL.
