The Troop 1954
Wednesday Newsletter

Wednesday, October 20, 2004

Hi Folks,

Thanks to everyone who helped at last night's meeting.

We've got lots of news and announcements this week, so please give the newsletter a good read.

First, we'd like to welcome Ben Woodley to Troop 1954.  Ben, we're glad to have you and it's going to be a great time.  Ben will be joining the H.F. Piffs.

Congrats and thanks to our newly assigned Patrol Coaches: Dr. J. for the Vicious Badgers, Eric Myers for the Biohazards, David Bandy for the Crimson Fromage, and Mz. Patty for the Highly Flammable Piffs.  Thanks much for agreeing to work with the boys.

If we're going to do Winter Camp, I need to hear from an adult interested in going (and taking charge of it) really soon (like before the end of the week).  If no one goes, we will lose our $100 reservation fee.  More about winter camp under announcements.

Popcorn forms and money is due next week.  I know a few of you have been asking for additional forms but so far I have been unable to find any.  Sorry.

Please bring everything you're going to use for the Halloween Carnival to next week's meeting.

Please bring $10 for scouts and $15 for adults to the next meeting if you are going to come to the McKinney Falls campout.

This Saturday from 3:30-5:30 I'd like to do some work on the equipment room.  If any one is around at that time to lend a hand, I'd appreciate it.

One thing that I really meant to mention last night but forgot:  We really need an OA representative.  To take this job, you must be a youth OA member and you must be willing to go to the meetings held the second Thursday of each month in San Marcos.  If you're interested in this position, please let me know.

As always, the Troop 1954 events calendar, this and all back newsletters,  and all sorts of other useful information is available on our website at www.sanmarcos1954.org

Announcements

1) Saturday from 3:30-5:30 we'll be working on the equipment room.  If you're free at that time, stop by and lend a hand.

2) Please bring all equipment for Halloween Carnival and money for McKinney Falls camp out to the next meeting.

3) Popcorn money and order forms are due at the next meeting.

4) Please check out the listings in Upcoming Events below.  You'll see we have major events planned through next September.

5) Winter Camp is December 26-30 at Lost Pines. People need to decide very soon if they are going to go. We need an adult to take charge of this program. Scouts who wish to go will need to bring full payment of $125 next meeting.

6) There are several upcoming events that we will not be participating in as a troop but that individual scouts may want to take part in.

a) Scout Law Hike: 10 am, November 6 in Schulenburg.  open to all Scouts in the Capitol Area Council, Sam Houston, and South Texas Council.  Schulenburg, Saturday, November 6, starting at 10:00 from the 1st United Methodist Church.  Scouts will do a city hike through historic Schulenburg, visiting 6 houses of Worship including the Jewish Synagogue, Temple Israel.  At each station we will hear messages from 12 different clergy and lay leaders on each of the 12 points of the Scout Law.  Special patch and lunch are included.  Cost is $6 per scout including the patch and lunch.

b) Also November 6, the AISD Pow Wow.  A great chance to see some really good dancing and lots of native crafts and other stuff.  You can find information for that at: http://www.austinpowwow.org/

c) The next weekend, November 13, there is a clean-up at University Camp in Wimberley from 9-5. This is a good opportunity for some service.

d) Also that same weekend is the OA Pow Wow at Lost Pines.  I'm not sure how open to the public that one is.

Boy, 6, missing 8 hours is found

Arkansas Democrat-Gazette (Little Rock)
October 16, 2004 Saturday

BY MICHAEL FRAZIER ARKANSAS DEMOCRAT-GAZETTE

A 6-year-old boy missing for about eight hours was reunited with his parents early Friday after a Boy Scouts search team found the child about a mile from his Saline County home, authorities said.

The five-person team found Adrian Lee Justice about 2 a.m. behind a tree, playing with some twigs, said Allen Lawrence, operations leader and advisor of Explorer Search and Rescue Crew 393 out of Little Rock.

Lawrence said the child responded when the searchers called out his name.

The boy was found a quarter-mile east of Zona Drive near the Pulaski-Saline county line, authorities said.

Adrian was in good spirits Friday afternoon at home with his mother, Cathryn Justice.

"He's fine, playing his video games," Justice said. "He said he was a little bit scared."

Adrian interrupted his mother, saying, "No, I wasn't scared."

Justice discovered her son missing after his father, Larry Justice, left to run an errand. Adrian had wanted to join his dad on the trip and followed him outside, but his father told him to go back inside the home with his mother.

The boy walked back into the house. His mother, who was in another room, thought he had left with his father.

Instead, the boy slipped back out of the house.

"It [was] the most helpless feeling you will ever have, especially when something like this happens," said Cathryn Justice, a carrier for the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. "I'm glad he's home."

Hours after his disappearance, a Level II Morgan Nick AMBER Alert was issued for Adrian about 8:30 p.m. Thursday.

Mounted patrols with the Little Rock Police Department, an Arkansas State Police helicopter, bloodhounds and search-and-rescue crews combed a 3-mile radius of Adrian's Lilac Drive home.

The missing-child alert was canceled less than 6 hours later after the Boy Scout volunteer search-and-rescue team found the boy shivering behind the tree. The temperature was in the upper 30s.

The team gave the child some warm clothes before he walked out of the brush.

"Other than being cold and lost, I thought that he looked well," said Justin Hagemeier, the team's adviser and assistant operations search leader. "He had been shaken a little bit, but not stirred."
