Hi Folks,
Thanks to all who helped at last night's meeting.
First, welcome to all the Webelos I and II who joined our meeting
last night. We're looking forward to having you join the troop
later this spring. Good things lie ahead!
Second, Merit Badge University is this Saturday. If you're
going you'll find additional information in announcements, point two.
Third, an important announcement about next week. Regular
meeting for the 22 is cancelled. Instead we will be doing a
service project at John Knox Camp. More details under
Announcements.
Fourth, I'm sorry I'm a bit behind in this but Congratulations to
Peter Baen who won a Silver Beaver Award this month. The Silver
Beaver is a Council Level award given for outstanding service to
Scouting and to the character development of youth. This is the
second year in a row that we've had a 1954 Scouter receive a Silver
Beaver.
I'm leaving the following notices from previous weeks up here.
Important stuff folks.
Summer Camp packets were distributed at the meeting on January
25. Briefly, we're going to summer camp at Camp Alexander in
Colorado this year. We leave on June 24 and return July 3.
Camp Alexander is a spectacular place and it should be a fantastic
camping experience. The cost is $400 for scouts and adults.
The first payment of $100 is due on February 15th. If you're
planning on going but haven't yet paid, please contact Susie Lewis,
slewis@mail.riverrats.net
as soon as possible.
Financial Aid: The troop committee has made some financial aid
funding available for expenses including camp. You will find the
policies for the awarding of financial aid and forms to apply for
financial aid by following this
link or by going to our troop website,
sanmarcos1954.org and
clicking troop policies, then financial aid policies. Note: the
committee made some changes in both the policies and forms at our last
meeting. Financial aid forms should be submitted to Curtis
Painton, Committee Chair.
I want to remind the younger scouts that there are participation
requirements for advancement to First Class. To be get your first
class rank, you have to participate in 10 troop events other than
meetings. At least three of them must include camping. During
these camp-outs you have to pitch a tent, help prepare a meal, select a
camp site for your patrol, plan a menu, serve as patrol cook...as well
as several other things. Some of our Biohazards and Vicious
Badgers haven't been on many camp-outs. They really need to start
coming if they want advancement.

Note: We have a new patrol, the Ferocious Ferrets, however, since
they are making their appearance very late in the six month
point term, their members will continue to be counted in their
earlier patrols until the next Court of Honor on April 12.Note: Scouts with more than three
consecutive misses will not be counted against patrol attendance
scores. Such scouts are not removed from their
patrols. They are simply not counted for attendance points
until they return. Also note that when all patrols score
the same on a category, it doesn't matter what they score. |

1) There are numerous events in February for scouts
needing extra participation. This weekend is Merit Badge University. You can't
participate in this unless you're currently signed up. Next
Tuesday is our John Knox service trip. The
following Saturday is our First Aid CPR class. So, that's
three remaining
scout activities in the month of February! You'll see the
dates on the calendar below.
2) The following scouts are signed up, paid, and
registered for Merit Badge University: Sean, Daniel, Tony, Nathan,
Philip, Dane, Mason R-K, and Ben W. The following scouts are
signed up, but, apparently, their courses have been dropped
(probably didn't pay on time): Bryce Morrison (anyone know who this
is?), John Myers, Zach Painton, and David Thompson. If you're
not signed up, you probably can't go. If you are signed up but
haven't paid, I really don't know what the story is.
Registration starts at 7:00 and the official opening ceremony is at
8:00. For early classes, we'll be leaving from the Scout Hut
at 6:45, sharp.
3) Next week our regularly scheduled meeting is cancelled.
Instead, we will be doing a service project out at John Knox Camp.
This will count as an activity for scouts who need an activity (many
still trying for First Class) and will count as service hours for
all. Either meet us out at John Knox at 7:00 or leave from the
Scout Hut at 6:30. Please note, cars will leave the Scout Hut
at 6:30 sharp. Directions to John Knox Ranch: Follow RR 12 to
the blinking light at the junction. Continue straight on RR 32
over Devil's Backbone. Coming down from Devil's Backbone,
watch for signs for John Knox Camp. Make a right at the sign
(it will be Mailroute Rd) and continue until you reach John Knox Rd.
Make a right on John Knox Rd. and continue until you reach the camp.
You can also get directions from the John Knox Ranch website at
www.johnknoxranch.org
4) First aid and CPR class will be February 26th at 2:00
at San Marcos High School. The Philmont crew is required to attend.
Others are encouraged to attend.
5) Camporee is coming up April 15-17. The theme of the Camporee is
Baden-Powell’s 1907 camp at Brownsea Island.

So guys, if you feel like you sold a lot of popcorn, consider this:
CUB SCOUT'S SALES EFFORT HAS TROOP POPPIN' WITH PRIDE 10-YEAR-OLD
RICHLAND BOY IS TOP POPCORN SALESMAN NATIONWIDE
Kathleen Ganster (Freelance for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)
For most parents, the thought of delivering more than 20,000 pounds
of popcorn may seem like a nightmare, but for Colleen and Bill Cenk,
of Richland, it was just another step in their son Ryan's sales
adventure.
Ryan, 10, is a Cub Scout with Pack 85 of the Seneca District, and
the top seller nationwide in the history of the annual
Boy Scout popcorn sale.
According to Bob De Witt, spokesman for the Greater Pittsburgh
Council of the Boy Scouts of America, the
Boy Scouts have been selling popcorn nationally
for 22 years, and the council has been selling it for the last 15.
"He is one determined little man," said DeWitt. "Plus he also had a
lot of help from his family."
The Greater Pittsburgh Council includes all of Allegheny, Beaver,
Greene and Washington counties, and parts of Westmoreland and
Fayette counties.
"The highest [individual] amount sold nationally in the past was
$20,000. It is considered a milestone if you sell $3,000 worth of
popcorn. In our district, the most sold in the past was about
$6,000," said DeWitt.
Ryan is credited with the sale of 1,032 cases of popped and unpopped
popcorn worth $25,006.
All told, about 9,000 Scouts in the Greater Pittsburgh Council sold
22,107 cases of popcorn worth $1.37 million. Ryan, a fourth-grader
at Hance Elementary School in the Pine Richland School District,
determined early in the sale he wanted to be the best.
"I made a plan. I had a dream that I wanted to be the top popcorn
seller in the world," he said.
To achieve this dream, Ryan enlisted the help of his parents, his
older brother, Billy, and other relatives. His uncle, Bob Cenk, who
was a key player in the sales.
"I called Uncle Bobby and asked him if he wanted to buy some
popcorn," said Ryan. Bob Cenk went on to ask friends to buy and one,
Bryan Azur, of ATM in Moon , bought popcorn for more than 400
employees.
"When he called and told me that he wanted 400 tins, I had him talk
to my mom. I was standing there with my mouth open," said Ryan.
That one sale accounted for half of Ryan's total sales.
Ryan also went door to door in his neighborhood and asked just about
everyone he ran into if they wanted to buy popcorn. "He thought it
would be unkind not to offer his wonderful product to everyone," his
mother said. They had several order sheets and his brother actually
created spread sheets so they could organize orders and delivery.
Come delivery time, the Cenk family rented a truck to pick up the
orders, and had to use the pack's rented truck as well.
"Ryan's orders filled our truck and half of the pack's truck. They
delivered his orders to our garage and had to go back and get the
rest," Colleen Cenk said.
Ryan's efforts were recognized Tuesday by the Greater Pittsburgh
Council in a ceremony at the Boy Scout Office at
Flag Plaza, in Pittsburgh's Uptown section. Ryan and his family left
Wednesday morning for Orlando, Fla., where Ryan will again be
recognized for his outstanding achievement and treated to a trip to
Disney World with his family.
"They had a raffle where two boys would be randomly selected to win
the trip. Ryan didn't win one of those trips but the pop corn
company, Trail's End, still felt they needed to recognize him for
his top sales," De Witt said.
The money raised from the sales will go towards council and pack
activities. "We will go camping, play laser tag, and go bowling. One
time we got to go to a sleep over at the zoo. I hope we can do that
again," said Ryan.
"Any child can triumph in scouting. It is an excellent venue for
children of all ages and abilities of all levels," Colleen Cenk
said.
As for Ryan, he said of his scouting adventures, "Mostly we have
fun. I get to do my best."
