Hi Folks,
Thanks to everyone who helped out at last night's meeting.
Particular thanks to Thomas Shieff, Alexey Dillon, and Daniel Frediani
for showing their pets. We've got a lot of stuff coming up in the next
month and a half so please read carefully.
1) There will be no meeting next week (San Marcos Spring Break).
Regular meetings resume March 22.
2) There will be no "This Week's Meeting" or "Wednesday Newsletter"
until April 4. During this time the discussion list will be
unmoderated and available for all.
You'll find all sorts of announcements of upcoming events in the
Announcements section
More techie stuff for those so inclined. Our website has now
migrated from the Texas State servers to troop1954.sanmartians.net.
It continues to be accessible through
www.sanmarcos1954.org.
I did encounter some issues in the migration and these remain unresolved
so there could be some interruptions of service in April. There
may also be broken links and other problems. Please report any
problems you find to me.
I'm leaving the following notices from previous weeks up here.
Important stuff folks.
Summer Camp packets were distributed at the meeting on January
25. Briefly, we're going to summer camp at Camp Alexander in
Colorado this year. We leave on June 24 and return July 3.
Camp Alexander is a spectacular place and it should be a fantastic
camping experience. The cost is $400 for scouts and adults.
The first payment of $100 was due on February 15th. If you're
planning on going but haven't yet paid, please contact Susie Lewis,
slewis@mail.riverrats.net
as soon as possible.
Financial Aid: The troop committee has made some financial aid
funding available for expenses including camp. You will find the
policies for the awarding of financial aid and forms to apply for
financial aid by following this
link or by going to our troop website,
sanmarcos1954.org and
clicking troop policies, then financial aid policies. Note: the
committee made some changes in both the policies and forms at our last
meeting. Financial aid forms should be submitted to Curtis
Painton, Committee Chair.
This week's patrol contest winners:
As always, the Troop
1954 events calendar, this and all back newsletters, and all sorts
of other useful information is available on our website at

Note: We have a new patrol, the Ferocious Ferrets, however, since
they are making their appearance very late in the six month
point term, their members will continue to be counted in their
earlier patrols until the next Court of Honor on April 12.Note: Scouts with more than three
consecutive misses will not be counted against patrol attendance
scores. Such scouts are not removed from their
patrols. They are simply not counted for attendance points
until they return. Also note that when all patrols score
the same on a category, it doesn't matter what they score. |

Scoutmaster.
3) Swimming test to be held March 29 at the Baptist
Academy in regular meeting time.
4) Troop elections will be held on April 5. Please
consider running for office but also please familarize yourself with

information at:
http://troop1954.sanmartians.net/Policies/leadership_policies.htm.
5) Court of Honor will be held April 12 (do we have a

April 5 (and let your coaches and leaders know about it).
6) On April 5, current Troop Committee members will be
asked to vote for the recipient of the first Scoutmaster's Award.
Please try to be present that night.
7) Camporee is coming up April 15-17. The theme of the Camporee is
Baden-Powell’s 1907 camp at Brownsea Island. Think skits,
gateways, and so on.
8) As you have probably heard, our CPR instructor was in
an automobile accident the day we were scheduled for the class.
The class has been rescheduled for Sunday, April 24th from 2-6
9) Crossover for our new scouts coming in from Pack 1954
will be at 7:00 on Thursday, April 28th at the Scout Hut. We
would really like a good turn out for this event.

Milligan receives Boy Scouts' National Meritorious Action Award
By Susan Pierce; Staff Writer, Chattanooga Times Free Press
(Tennessee)
Three Ooltewah young men are being recognized for their bravery and
quick thinking in rescuing an infant from a rain-swollen creek last
spring.
In a ceremony Monday night, Zachary Milligan, a fifth-grader at
Ooltewah Elementary School, received the National Meritorious Action
Certificate of Merit from Boy Scouts of America. The national award
recognizes heroism through lifesaving or other notable acts of
service that put into practice Scouting skills and ideals.
"Only one Scout in the council per year might qualify for
meritorious action awards. They are few and far between," said Kevin
Beirne, finance and marketing director of the Cherokee Council of
Boy Scouts of America.
CJ Baker and Lebron Tinker, a junior and freshman respectively at
Ooltewah High School, who also were involved in the rescue, are
being nominated by the Ooltewah JROTC Department for a national
award.
"CJ and Lebron are being nominated for the JROTC Medal of Heroism,"
said Sgt. Al Conrad, OHS instructor. "It is a military medal awarded
by the Department of the Army. This will be the first time in the
four years I've been here that any student has been nominated."
According to Zachary's Scoutmaster, Dennis Williams of Pack 3150,
the three boys were walking the Collegedale greenway on May 1, 2004,
when they observed a young girl approximately 5 or 6 years of age
pushing a 6-month-old infant in a stroller as their mother walked
with friends several feet behind. The boys said the child would push
the stroller then let go, watching as it would glide forward.
As the three friends watched, the child let the stroller get out of
control, and it rolled down an embankment into the creek.
"It had rained the night before, causing the creek water to rise,"
said CJ. "The water covered the stroller and baby. The mom was
unable to reach the baby in time to help. My friends and I ran
toward the baby to help, but we were unable to reach the stroller in
time. We jumped into the creek water."
As the boys ran toward the water, CJ stripped off his shirt and
tossed it aside before diving into the creek water. Deborah Baker,
CJ's mother, said her son later told her the "water was just over
his head and he's 5 feet, 10 inches."
"The stroller had submerged and the current was carrying it down the
creek," said Mrs. Baker.
"Everyone went after the baby right into the muddy creek water,"
said Zachary.
"CJ and Lebron dived down into the water to grab the stroller and
pull it back up to the surface," said Mrs. Baker. "Zach had waded
out to his neck, when CJ yelled it was too deep and for him to keep
the snakes away. Zach didn't know how to swim well then, but he's
learned now."
Zach explained the boys had earlier seen snakes in the water. So he
grabbed a large stick and began beating the surface of the water
around them. As the older boys brought the infant to the surface,
Zachary unstrapped her from the stroller.
"Luckily, CJ took his shirt off before going into the creek," said
Zachary. "We wrapped the baby in his shirt so she wouldn't get sick.
We got out and gave the baby back to her mom. She offered us some
money, but we told her no, it was something anyone would have done.
"Then we hurried to my mama's house because we didn't want to be
late getting home," added the Scout.
When the boys' families shared the story with Mr. Williams, he began
the documentation process for the National Meritorious Action Award,
which culminated nine months later with the certificate
presentation.
"The process was delayed for several weeks while we tried to locate
the mother of the rescued baby, but she never came forward," said
Mr. Williams.
Mr. Williams said a Scout investigative team comprised of Programs
Director Dexter Cantelou, District Executive Natalie Stephens and
himself verified the event's facts, interviewed people involved and
filled out forms. That information along with statements from each
boy was submitted to Boy Scouts' national headquarters.
"Any troop would be proud to have a Scout like Zachary," said CJ.
"These young men thought not of their own safety, but the value of
human life," said Mrs. Baker. "Zachary's act of kindness
demonstrates the meaning of what a Scout should be."
