The Troop 1954
Wednesday Newsletter

Wednesday, December 14, 2005

Hi Folks,

Thanks to all who helped with last night's meeting.

We adults really enjoyed the patrol/crew cook-off.  I think the guys did a better job than ever this year.  They put more thought and creativity into the contest than we've seen before.  While we did select a winner, it was the unanimous decision of the judges to award prizes to all the patrols competing.  As promised, the winning patrol will receive $50 in cash at the next Court of Honor.  Two patrols tied for second place.  They will receive $35 to be used purchasing something for the patrol.  The patrols that placed 3rd and 4th will each receive $20 to be used for the patrol.  Early in the new year, we'll meet at a store (Wal-mart, or Coleman or where-ever) to allow those patrols to make their purchases.  So, here are the winners.

In Fourth Place, The Vicious Badgers (or cheeky hobbits?)
In Third Place, The Ferocious Ferrets
Tied for Second Place: The Whitey Tighties and Crew 1954
And the winner is: The Mullets

You will find the reasoning for the rankings in the essay section of this newsletter.  We'll also be talking briefly with each patrol/crew at our next meeting.  In the meanwhile, all we can say is that we're truly proud of all the kids.

Our Next Meeting will be held on January 10th. This will be the last issue of the Wednesday Newsletter until January 11th.  However, keep looking at your email for information about recharter as well as a variety of other issues likely to come up between now and then.

To one and all: have happy and safe holidays.  Let us look forward to a new year full of fellowship, adventure, learning, and fun.  May the journey continue always.  May it bring us to the places we wish to go.

As always, the Troop 1954 events calendar, this and all back newsletters,  and all sorts of other useful information is available on our website at www.sanmarcos1954.org  The Wednesday Newsletter is the official record of Troop 1954 and serves as minutes for all troop and committee meetings.

notes: 1) you get half a point for wearing a "class B" on a "class A" night
2) We're adding a category for the evening's contest (whatever it may be).  We'll see how it works.
3) We'll try another new rule...especially because we have reduced summer attendance.  In case of tie, the patrol with the largest number of people attending gets the award.

Note: Scouts with more than three consecutive misses will not be counted against patrol attendance scores.  Such scouts are not removed from their patrols.  They are simply not counted for attendance points until they return.  Also note that when all patrols score the same on a category, it doesn't matter what they score.
Behavior, subtract for each incident.

Fails to come to order when scout sign given -1
Fighting with each other -1 per incident
Bad language -1 per incident
Failure to treat others with respect -1
Asked repeatedly to do any task -1
Fails to clean up -1
Shows poor sportsmanship -1

Spirit: Add for each, highest score is a five.

All members cooperate with game +1
Members make progress on meeting’s task +1
Members show enthusiasm for tasks +1
Members show good organization (listen to PL and Coach) +1
Members exemplify Scout Law +1

News of the Scouting World

Here are the full results and analysis from the Patrol Cook-Off

In fourth place The Vicious Badgers (Cheeky Hobbits?) did a good job considering about half of their crew was missing.  Their meal was pretty basic.  The foil candelabra was a nice touch. Nothing stood out really, and maybe that was the problem.  However, all and all a great attempt for younger scouts.  Nice show of manners.

In Third Place, The Ferocious Ferrets did a good job of working together, and the cucumber/tomato appetizer was very nice, as was the pudding pie created on-site.  Detractions included not pausing as a group for the blessing, and inappropriate use of music.  A little soft background is nice, blasting is not so hot.

Tied for Second Place, Crew 1954 and The Whitey Tighties

The Crew did a great job, but also relied a little more on help and guidance from their advisor than did the other patrols. Décor was good, blessing nice and the wine pourer was particularly getting into it...
Fantastic! Food was good, though the salad and the oatmeal apple cobbler was really good, as was cooking with coals. Took off some points for the limited teamwork on the clean-up, but all in all a great showing for a new crew.

If we judged on taste alone, Whitey Tighties had the best meal, hands down. However, they scored a bit lower than others on presentation and manners.  I think a few more of these events and scouts #2 and #3 would get into it and really ramp up their presentation and manners (and perhaps use less skateboards...). The one living with the upscale meal and dining experience could share lots with his fellow scouts...if they'd listen.

First prize went to The Mullets. The research, the planning, and learning a new skill in making sushi was really a treat. Less guys to organize, but much more to learn and the presentation (and the food) was very well done.
